Get your a-levels

As I work in a hugely successful publishing house that boasts offices worldwide, I’m often asked by fresh-faced youngsters how best to get into this sector.

I tend to respond with the simple line: “Stay in school.”

Get your a-levels in some key and obvious subjects – English is a necessity – and opportunities in the media will be open to you.

After school, university must be considered as having a degree makes a real difference when you are job hunting, in fact some companies will view a degree as vital.

One big tip is to undertake work experience during your studies. Most newspapers, magazines and publishing houses

Find Top Jobs in the Media

Finding a top job in the media is a difficult task – not helped by many corporations, particularly newspaper publishers, shedding jobs – however, there are some tips to increase your chances.

First off, if you’re applying for a job in which writing is essential – such as a reporter – ensure that your CV and cover letter are error-free. Stupid mistakes see your application promptly consigned to the bin.

Secondly, while the web makes it far easier than before to find job vacancies nationwide it also means more competition. A good tip is to look in your local newspaper as sometimes you can find the perfect job just round the corner!

Good luck!

Looking for flats to rent in Edinburgh

I’m currently on the hunt for suitable flats to rent in Edinburgh ahead of a move later this year.

Obviously, I need to arrange a few viewings beforehand, but I’ve already been impressed by the range of choice available in Scotland’s capital.

I’ve been based in Glasgow for the past couple of years but a recent reorganisation within the public relations company I work for has led to us opening a new sub-office down in Leith with myself responsible for hiring and  managing the new team.

Since our new offices are down in the trendy Leith area, I’m looking  for a flat close by so I can either cycle or walk to work. A place near the waterfront would be a bonus.

Johnston Press Plan More Cuts

It brings no pleasure to report that Johnston Press, one of the UK’s major newspaper publishers, is set to cull more jobs from across its roster of papers.

Johnston Press, who publish the Scotsman and the Yorkshire Evening Post as well as hundreds of local newspapers, have been one of the hardest hit in the recession due to the downturn in local advertising.

As the recession bit, local advertisers cut coasts by going online – especially the mainstays of local newspaper advertising such as used cars dealers and estate agents.

That saw advertising revenues cut drastically, and with the company seemingly clueless as to how to maximise the power of the web they appear to be going knowhere, I mean just look at the Scotsman’s terrible website.

Finding an IT job in the Media

Locating a job in the media can be exceptionally difficult – especially now with opportunities limited and the amount of job seekers on the rise.

With that in mind, ensuring that your CV is adaptable for different jobs is a must, as is keeping an open mind about the job you’d be willing to take.

One suggestion is to look for an IT job at a media outlet – that way you’ll be involved in the buzz of the media environment and ideally placed to apply for any positions that become available.

Using the web makes it easy to find job opportunities at media companies across the world.
