At home and in the workplace, the media is everywhere

So, What is media? The word media covers a huge range of applications, and basically means any form of communication and transference of information. In the modern world, we tend to use it to describe the press, television, radio and Internet, although it can also be applied to the arts, such as painting. In fact, cave painting from prehistoric times are among the earliest forms of media known to man.

The television is perhaps the most widely-used form of media in the developed world. We tend to rely on it not only for entertainment purposes, but also as a way of keeping up with the latest news. There are far more watch people watch television on a daily basis than those who buy a national newspaper. The major channels of the UK, especially perhaps the BBC, are relied upon to report news without bias.

The power of the press

The same cannot be said for the printed press. The UK’s newspapers have a long tradition of siding with political parties, and of providing, to a greater or lesser degree, a rather partisan view on the world’s events, especially during the run-up to a General Election. It’s been said that in the past political careers were made, or broken, by those in Fleet Street.

Adverts bring messages into the home

Advertising is a multi-million pound business, and one which wields enormous influence and is probably one of the main media uses. Television adverts during popular shows like ‘Coronation Street’ are among the most expensive, and the most lucrative, in the country. Similarly, those broadcast during half-time intervals in major football matches, especially during the World Cup, are much in demand.
